What is a civil traffic infraction?
A civil traffic infraction is a non-criminal charge that usually can be disposed of by paying a civil penalty or by electing to complete a defensive driving course. A court appearance is required when the violation involves serious bodily injury, a fatality, leaving a child unattended in a vehicle, passing a stopped school bus on the right side, hauling an unsafe load (shifting, dropping, or leaking), or speeding at 30 mph or more above the speed limit.
