Traffic Citation Options

What is a civil traffic infraction?
A civil traffic infraction is a non-criminal charge that usually can be disposed of by paying a civil penalty or by electing to complete a defensive driving course. A court appearance is required when the violation involves serious bodily injury, a fatality, leaving a child unattended in a vehicle, passing a stopped school bus on the right side, hauling an unsafe load (shifting, dropping, or leaking), or speeding at 30 mph or more above the speed limit.

What are my options for disposing of a citation for a civil traffic infraction?

Know Your Options BEFORE Paying Your Traffic Citation

Option 1: Pay the Traffic Civil Penalty
Option 2: Elect Basic Driver Improvement School
Option 3: Request Court Hearing

NOTE: The Clerk’s office must receive your option with payment, if applicable, within 30 calendar days of the date that the officer issued the citation.  Once you have chosen an option you cannot change your mind and choose another option.
